Fundamental Constituents of Matter

Matter is composed of different types of atoms.

Atoms consist of a nucleus and an electron cloud.

Nucleus

  • Protons –
    • positive 1^{+} charge
    • consist of 2 up quarks and 1 down quark.
  • Neutrons –
    • neutral charged
    • consist of 2 down quarks and 1 up quark

Electron Cloud

  • Electrons –
    • negative 1^{-} charge

Elementary Particles

  • Smallest unit of matter that cannot be further broken down into smaller structures
  • Quarks (6 types)
  • Leptons (6 types)
