Thermochemistry

Explain in detail how heat energy moves during the freezing and boiling of a substance.

  • Freezing
    • lose energy
    • lowered temperature
      • decrease kinetic energy of molecules
    • less molecular motion → crystal structures
    • become crystal/solid
  • Boiling
    • gain energy
    • raise temperature
      • increase kinetic energy
    • more motion → breaking surface tension
    • become single molecules in a gas

  • Main Points
    • Increase in energy → increase in temp and vice versa
    • Increase in temp → increase in kinetic energy
    • Increase in kinetic → increase in molecules motion
      • all pertain to decreasing as well
    • More energy → more emotion
    • Less energy → less motion
