Physical Vs. Chemical Change

Classify each of the following as a physical or chemical change:

  • Ice forming – physical, water cooling to solid
  • Salt Dissolving – chemical, bond breaking
  • Gasoline Burning – chemical, bond breaking
  • Paint Drying – physical, liquid to solid
  • Glass Making – physical, change of shape

Chemical Change – anytime bonds are broken between atoms

Ice forming = water cooling to solid

Sat Dissolving = bond breaking

Gasoline = light heat smoke -> bonds breaking

Paint drying = drying similar to sand drying

Glassmaking = change shape cools a lot, no bonds broken

State = form of matter (solid, liquid, gas)

changing state = physical change
