Application of the Ideal Gas Law

Today we are discussing ideal gas law.

Ideal gas law: atoms or molecules are so small that they do not interact.

PV=nRT

  • P = Pressure
  • V = Volume
  • n = Number of molecules
  • R = constant
  • T = temperature (Kelvin or Rankine)

5 Liters container, 500 K, 3 moles H_2, R=0.08206\frac{L atm}{mol K}. Find P

PV=nRT

P(5 L)=(3 moles)(0.08206\frac{L atm}{mol K})(500 K)

Simplify

P(5 L)=123.09 L atm

P = 24.618 atm
