Building a Cladogram

Cladogram- a diagram showing how evolutionary lines branched from common ancestors

  1. List characteristics of the organisms

  • Clade – group of species that includes all descendants; a complete branch
  • Monophyletic group – all descendants from a single common ancestor
  • Derived character- A trait that arose in the most recent common ancestors and was passed to its descendants; every branch point represents a derived character

Examples of a clade ->rodent

monkey and rodent

bird, monkey, rodent
