Phases of the Cell Cycle/Mitosis

  1. Interphase:
    • the largest phase
    • a. G1 (gap 1) – cell grow
    • b. S (synthesis) – DNA replicated
    • c. G2 (gap 2) – cell prepares to divide
  2. Prophase:
    • cromatin condense into chromosomes
    • nucleolus dissapears
    • nuclear membrane dissolves and centromeres connect to spindle fibers
  3. Metaphase:
    • chromosomes align at metaphase plate along the center of cell
    • they align due to opposite pull of centerosomes
  4. Anaphase:
    • the proteins binding sister chromotids together break anddaughter chromosomes go to opposite ends of the cell
  5. Telophase:
    • spindle fibers disappear
    • nucleolus reappears
    • nuclear membrane is formed
    • chromosomes → cromatin
  6. Cytokinesis:
    • cell pinches apart by means of a contractile ring that tightens where the metaphase plate was
